The Growing Cybersecurity Workforce Gap
Cyber threats are evolving at an unprecedented rate, and the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals has never been higher. According to the 2024 Cybersecurity Workforce Study conducted by (ISC)2, the global cybersecurity workforce gap has surged to over 4.7 million specialists. In Europe alone, the shortage is estimated at 392,000 professionals.
Despite a 0.1% increase in the workforce compared to last year, the talent gap has widened by 19.1%, significantly impacting organizations worldwide. 59% of respondents stated that the lack of skilled professionals has hindered their ability to secure their companies.
Why Closing the Cybersecurity Gap Matters
The increasing shortage of cybersecurity talent poses a direct threat to businesses, institutions, and even national security. Without qualified specialists, organizations struggle to defend against cyberattacks, data breaches, and ransomware incidents, leading to financial and reputational damage.
Cybersecurity threats in Romania have also intensified, with a notable rise in ransomware attacks, phishing scams, and supply chain vulnerabilities. The rapid digitalization of critical sectors such as finance, healthcare, and government services makes cybersecurity expertise more essential than ever.
Developing cybersecurity expertise is a time-intensive process
It’s not just about hiring more people – it’s about investing, early on, in education, training, and professional development. This could be the safest bet at giving young people access to the industry through networking, mentorship and learning initiatives that help them develop critical skills and connections that accelerate their careers.
How Romania can enhance its young cybersecurity talent
To bridge the cybersecurity talent gap, Romania should adopt a multi-faceted approach that includes:
- Expanding educational resources: Schools and universities have started integrating cybersecurity courses, but there’s still room to enhance both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.
- Encouraging practical training: Cyber ranges, simulations, and real-world scenarios help students and professionals develop critical problem-solving skills.
- Fostering a strong cybersecurity community: Mentorship programs and industry collaborations provide valuable guidance and career opportunities.
- Promoting competitions: Cybersecurity competitions help students test their skills, learn soft skills like problem solving in a time limited environment and team work, gain confidence, showcase their expertise to potential employers, and stand out in the job market.
- Investing in education and local initiatives: Both public and private organizations should support local initiatives that raise awareness and expand interest in cybersecurity. Advocacy and involvement from all stakeholders – government, businesses, educational institutions, and individuals – are crucial in popularizing the field and developing a sustainable infosec industry.
Romania’s initiatives in cybersecurity education for young talents
In recent years, Romania has seen the rise of multiple initiatives aimed at developing cybersecurity talent, particularly among high school and university students. Programs like the National Cybersecurity Challenge, the Romanian Cybersecurity Olympiad, and UNbreakable Romania have emerged as key platforms for skill-building. These initiatives result from public-private-academic partnerships, ensuring that young cybersecurity enthusiasts receive the training and industry exposure to succeed.
UNbreakable Romania: an award-winning case study in cybersecurity education
UNbreakable Romania is a national competition organized by Bit Sentinel & Orange Romania, has been nurturing the next generation of cybersecurity specialists since 2020 through training, mentorship, and competitions.
Last year, UNbreakable set a new participation record, with over 1,400 young people joining the program. Among them, 839 actively competed in the individual competition, 80% of whom expressed interest in internships and job opportunities in cybersecurity.
For 2025, UNbreakable aims to attract nearly 2,000 participants and help them transition into the workforce.

Shaping the future of cybersecurity in Romania
By constantly investing in education, practical experience, and industry collaboration, Romania is paving the way for a strong cybersecurity ecosystem.
The future of cybersecurity lies in the hands of the next generation – providing them with the right resources today will shape a safer digital world tomorrow.
